Summary:
Sadly our time together has come to an end. But beofre we say goodbye to the Bureaucracy for good. Here are some study tips. This is not a section that you can read instead of reading the chapter completely. This is just a little topical review of the major points about the Bureaucracy you should know. I know that you learned enough the first time so that you do not have to go back and search for more information while studying. However, if you do, you know where to find all of the information.
A Bureaucracy in general terms as theorized by Max Weber are:
- specification of jobs with detailed rights, obligations, responsibilities, scope of authority
- system of supervision and subordination
- unity of command
- extensive use of written documents
- training in job requirements and skills
- application of consistent and complete rules (company manual)
- assign work and hire personnel based on competence and experience
There are four types of Bureaucratic Entities:
- Cabinet Departments
- Regulatory Agencies
- Government Corporation
- Independent Executive Agencies
The Bureaucracy is "Controlled" by other parts of the government
- Executive Branch
- Legislative Branch
- Judicial Branch
- Special Interestin Groups
The government spends a lot of time and money regulating different parts of American society and the economy.
